Big Pine Key, home of the National Key Deer Refuge, is a calm slow paced community in the Lower Keys of Florida. Approximately 200 of the estimated 300 Key Deer live in the refuge. The deer are able to live in the area due to an old rock quarry now called the Blue Hole which supplies fresh water for the deer. While exploring the Watson Hammock Trail be sure to keep your eyes open as the Key Deer are only as big as a dog. Big Pine also serves as the launch site to Looe Key Reef where you can dive and explore to your heart’s delight. Bahia Honda State Park is only minutes away on Highway 1 where you can rent fishing gear, bicycles, diving gear and kayaks. When you are done for the day Big Pine Key invites you to sit down and relax at any one of its many cafes or restaurants and enjoy the deep colors of a Florida Keys sunset. With an average air and water temperature above 70 degrees you can leave your sweaters at home. Florida Keys Marathon Airport (MTH, 20 miles) and Key West International Airport (EYW, 25 miles) are the closest landing strips to the Lower Keys. Most flights are routed through Miami International Airport (MIA). |
