Along Florida’s scenic highway 30-A, you will find Blue Mountain Beach. Aptly named for its lushly vegetated sand dunes, which from a distance appear as blue mountains even though the highest point in the area is approximately 350 feet above sea level. Eleven freshwater dune lakes can be found on the 18 mile stretch of 30-A. These lakes create freshwater estuaries that flow into the Gulf of Mexico: Draper Lake, Big Redfish Lake and Alligator Lake are the closest three to Blue Mountain. The scenic 30-A bike path is a great way to see the beautiful beaches certified by the Blue Wave Campaign as being clean and environmentally friendly. Bicycle and water sports equipment are available for those who wish to explore the area at their own pace. There are also tours of the dune lakes and surrounding state parks. Comprised mostly of residential condominiums and beach homes, Blue Mountain Beach presents a non-commercial environment to relax in. If you enjoy canoeing be sure to visit the “Canoe Capital of Florida” also known as the little town of Milton. With the Blackwater River State Park right next to the town you can enjoy miles of adventuring. The easiest airport to access the panhandle from is Okaloosa Regional Airport (VPS, 25 miles). |
