On the narrow strip of land between Lake Stella and Lake Crescent, is Crescent City, Florida. Massive oak trees with Spanish moss dangling from their branches line the streets of this small community. The town lies in the heart of what was known as the "Old Oliver Plantation", a tract of land embracing about 1,800 acres. Early settlers included families of northern military men who came here to seek a new life, new hope and prosperity. It was back in the late 1800’s that the owners of the area thought the lake, then known as Dunn's Lake, resembled a crescent moon and changed its name to Lake Crescent. Crescent City was chosen to be the name of the small town created on its shore back in 1876. The small clear water lake on the west was named Lake Stella as it resembled a star. Nationally known as the "Bass Capital of the World," the fishing is excellent. Every April Crescent City hosts the Catfish Festival. Crescent City is also close enough for a day trip to Florida’s main attractions such as Daytona Beach, Disney World, The Kennedy Space Center, and Universal Studios, Orlando. Daytona Beach Regional Airport (DAB, 50miles) and Orlando International Airport (MCO, 70miles) are the largest nearby airports to Crescent City. |
