Okaloosa Island is the western barrier island, on the Emerald Coast, that protects the Choctawatchee Bay and Niceville from the Gulf of Mexico in Florida’s panhandle. A beautiful beach that stretches the island’s length along the Gulf waters fronts the island. Here you will find a long pier on which you can watch the waves, go fishing, enjoy covered picnic areas and find plenty of soft white sand to play in. If you are looking to go out to sea there are boat, kayak and other watercraft rentals available. Just across a bridge to the east is Destin, the self proclaimed “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” Here you will find numerous fishing guides to take you on a seaward adventure. Fort Walton lies just north of Okaloosa Island and hosts the U.S. Air Force’s Armament Museum and Eglin Air Force Base, the largest base in the world. There is also Florida’s Gulfarium, where you will enjoy seeing dolphins, sharks, penguins and other sea life. For the avid golfer there is even a chip and put 9-hole course on Okaloosa Island (nearby towns have full courses available). Okaloosa Island is a wonderful place to spend a relaxing vacation on the Gulf of Mexico without a heavy commercial tourism. The nearest public use airport to Niceville is Eglin AF AUX NR 3 DUKE (EGI, 25miles) in Valparaiso. Hurlburt Field (HRT, 4miles), Pensacola Regional Airport (PNS, 45miles) and Panama City International Airport (PFN, 65miles) offer additional flight options. |
