Astor is a small community of about 1,500 people on the St. John’s River in Lake County, Florida. Nestled between Daytona Beach and Orlando, Astor is close to many of Florida’s main attractions without having the influx of tourists. St. John’s River is an excellent river for boating, camping and fishing enthusiasts, and with large freshwater lakes like Lake George nearby, your vacation on the water can last for days. You can even tour the St. John River by airboat. For those of us who prefer to have earth beneath our feet, the Ocala National Forest surrounds Astor where horseback riding, hiking and nature watching are very popular. There is even a historical pioneer settlement nearby. If you want to be close to some of Florida’s biggest attractions, but don’t want the fast paced tourist towns to stress you out, Astor is a perfect little town that will be happy to accommodate. Nearest airports are Orlando International Airport (MCO, 50 miles), Ocala International Airport (OCF, 35 miles), and Daytona Beach International Airport (DAB, 35 miles). |
